SkyDrive Pro Upload Failed

Invalid Characters Or File Type Blocked

When syncing your local files with SkyDrive Pro (OneDrive for Business) in Office 365 SharePoint Online you may get the errors in the Microsoft Office Upload Center "Upload Failed Invalid characters" and "Upload Failed File type blocked".

SkyDrive Pro blocks files if they contain any of the following characters in the file name \ / : * ? " < > | # %. SkyDrive Pro also blocks files from upload that end with certain extensions. SkyDrive Pro blocks these characters and file extensions to reduce the opportunities for viruses and malware to spread in the workplace. The problem is that these characters and file types are quite common on the average company file server.

  • SkyDrive Pro shows a red X against each of the files that have upload problems in Windows Explorer.

How To Work Around Failed Uploads

The list of invalid characters and file types that are blocked by SkyDrive Pro is fixed and cannot be changed in Office 365. You will need to workaround these restrictions in order to migrate your files.

All invalid characters in your folder and file names will need to be removed or renamed, for example renaming a # character to _. Files that end with blocked file extensions should be renamed.
